Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya Roads Board has disbursed Sh61.8 billion to road agencies for maintenance of roads for the nine months period to March 31 this year. The Board in a statement on Friday said the released funds represent 92 per cent allocation for the financial year 2022\/23.<\/p>\n

“The funds have been released to three road agencies and the Kenya Wildlife Service which maintains park roads,” KRB says. The government had allocated Sh66.7 billion to road maintenance for the financial year 2022\/23.<\/p>\n

Allocated funds comprise the road maintenance levy and transit tolls which are collected from motorists through the Sh18 per-litre road maintenance levy and transit tolls.<\/p>\n

KRB director general Rashid Mohamed said the disbursement will be invested in the road network to improve transportation of people and goods, ultimately enhancing the country’s economic development.<\/p>\n

In the allocations, Kenya National Highways Authority will receive 22.9 billion while the Kenya Rural Roads Authority will be allocated Sh28.1 billion.<\/p>\n

The Urban Roads Authority will get Sh10.2 billion, Kenya Wildlife Service will receive Sh510 million. Under the national highways, the board notes a total of 12,968.39 Kilometres have been maintained as of March 31 this year.<\/p>\n

Out of this, 9,177 Kilometres are performance-based contracts, 3,611 Kilometres are routine and spot improvements, while periodic maintenance covered 180 Kilometres. International corridors totaling 2,867 Kilometres also received the maintenance.<\/p>\n

They include the Mombasa-Voi-Mtio-Andei-Nairobi-Rironi (A8) Road, Rironi-Gilgil-Nakuru at Nyahururu Interchange (A8) Road, Mai Mahiu-Narok-Bomet-Kaplong (B5) Road, Thika Super Highway (A2S) Road and Thika-Mwingi-Garissa (A3) Road.<\/p>\n

Others include: Marwa-Nanyuki-Isiolo-Marsabit-Moyale (A2) Road, Nakuru-Mau Summit-Timboroa-Eldoret-Malaba (A8) Road and Mau Summit-Kericho-Kisumu-Busia (A12) Road.<\/p>\n

The board further highlights other projects aimed at improving connectivity along the international corridors including the construction of Malakisi bridge in Western Kenya. It is aimed to enhance connectivity and business along Kiameti and Lwakhakha on the Kenya\/Uganda border.<\/p>\n
