Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula has warned Kenyans not expect MPs to reject the Finance Bill, 2023. Speaking during the 60th Madaraka Day celebrations at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega, Savula said MPs have in the past often skipped crucial house sittings of such nature.<\/p>\n

The former MP said lack of quorum during the voting day of the Finance Bill will see it pass. MPs are expected to debate the Bill amid rising criticism from unionists, political leaders, the clergy and the public.<\/p>\n

The DG called on President William Ruto to recall the controversial Bill saying it does not address the high cost of living, which he said is the main concern by citizens.<\/p>\n

Savula termed the proposed housing levy as untimely. “It is really sad that in Kenya lack of quorum will see the Bill passed, do not depend on MPs to disapprove the Finance Bill,” he said.<\/p>\n

This comes at a time when the Parliamentary Finance and National Planning committee chaired by Molo MP Moses Kimani Kuria is tasked with preparation of a comprehensive public participation report to be tabled in Parliament for debate.<\/p>\n

The Financial Bill, 2023 intends to introduce a compulsory 3 per cent House Levy, a statutory deduction from civil servants’ salary. The move has been criticized by trade unionists and political players as punitive. Opposition Chief Raila Odinga has demanded withdrawal of the Bill as a condition for resumption of the bi-partisan talks.<\/p>\n
