Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>President William Ruto has backed the proposal for an open ballot system during the voting for the Finance Bill 2023. Ruto said he is waiting to see the legislators who were going to oppose the Bill.<\/p>\n

“I am waiting for the Members of Parliament who will go and vote against the employment of these young people, against housing that would give these people the chance to own a house with five per cent mortgage,” he said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

He said the lawmakers had fewer mortgages because of the tax paid by the public. Ruto spoke during the thanksgiving service of Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya in Narok.<\/p>\n

The Bill which is already at the National Assembly awaiting the MPs’ decision, has been subject to fierce criticism from leaders and Kenyans alike. Ruto called upon the Kenya Kwanza legislators to pass it while the opposition leader Raila Odinga has called unto Azimio MPs to reject it.<\/p>\n

The Bill proposes, among others, that employees contribute three per cent towards the Housing Fund Levy. This, Ruto said, is not a tax but a contribution and saving scheme towards the affordable housing project. He also said the contribution is mandatory. Ruto said that the creation of employment is what’s driving him to introduce the plans to Kenyans.<\/p>\n

“The real motivation behind it (housing project) is the jobs we are going to create for the young people of Kenya. Ni kuhakikisha kwamba vijana wanapata ajira (It’s to ensure the youth are employed),” he said last Friday.<\/p>\n

The President said the government will need five youths for every house to be constructed. Azimio Coalition had also called for an open ballot. Speaking on May 26, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka said this will showcase the leaders who are after the will of Kenyans or oppression.<\/p>\n

“We will push for an open voting method for the Finance Bills and we shall count them one by one,” Kalonzo said.<\/p>\n

“We want Kenyans to know the MPs who are out to push them into more suffering.”<\/p>\n
