Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Trade CS Moses Kuria has made recommendations to the National Assembly Committee on Finance to have the minimal retail price for quarter liter of wines and spirits sold at a minimum of Sh250.<\/p>\n

The CS said selling the quantity of alcohol below Sh250 indicates that the product is likely illicit.<\/p>\n

“I have given the Finance Committee a recommendation that any 250ml wines and spirits should not be sold below cost price. Where that cost price is going to be published by the Kenya Revenue Authority from time to time ,” he said.<\/p>\n

He was speaking on Monday during a multiagency meeting at Kirubia Stadium, Tharaka Nithi County.<\/p>\n

Kuria added that they calculated cost of products for manufacturing and levies charged by authorities and concluded that 250ml bottle could not retail below Sh250.<\/p>\n

“Tumefanya hesabu, mimi na KRA and we know the cost structure. Tunajua hio ni excise duty, cost of ethanol etc,” he said.<\/p>\n

In March, Kuria said he had sought amendments to have the minimum retail price of 250ml liquor sold at Sh300.<\/p>\n

“To put an end to the chronic problem of illicit brews that is killing our people, I have forwarded to the National Treasury an amendment through the Finance Bill 2023 that the minimum retail price for 250ml wines and spirits be Shh300,” Kuria said in tweet on March 28, 2023.<\/p>\n

During that time, Kuria said the move was aimed at making alcohol affordable to youth who are the main consumers of cheap liquor.<\/p>\n

Kuria’s recommendations come at a time the government has intensified the war on illicit brews and drug abuse among the youth particularly in the Mt Kenya region.<\/p>\n

The war led by led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is working towards ending the use of illicit brew and substance abuse.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the Tharaka Nithi meeting, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said government will review all licences issued to manufacturers of alcohol in the country.<\/p>\n

“There are unscrupulous manufacturers who, though licensed to produce legitimate alcohol, have established parallel lines to manufacture poisonous substances,” he said.<\/p>\n

The CS added that the government was not fighting legitimate alcohol businesses.<\/p>\n

“Those who are compliant have nothing to fear. We will protect all those who are compliant and paying taxes. But we will not allow the sale of poisonous substances disguised as alcohol,” Kindiki said.<\/p>\n
