Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Former Kakamega Senator and United Democratic Alliance secretary general Cleophas Malala has defended his attendance at Cabinet meetings.<\/p>\n

The SG said on Wednesday that he took the oath of secrecy to attend the meetings as an advisor to President William Ruto and not as a Cabinet Secretary.<\/p>\n

Malala said the number of CSs is set by the Constitution and that the President has not breached the law by allowing his advisors to sit in the Cabinet.<\/p>\n

The UDA official rubbished claims by critics that he was sworn in at State House last week.<\/p>\n

“I did not take an oath of office, I took an oath of secrecy. The President needs wisdom and thought it wise that his advisors needed to be with him when he is deliberating on crucial matters of this country,” Malala said.<\/p>\n

Speaking during an interview with Spice FM, Malala said his role in the cabinet will be to ensure that the Kenya Kwanza manifesto is implemented by relevant CSs as promised during last year’s campaigns.<\/p>\n

“I come in to advise him (president) on matters politics and to make sure that the manifesto on which we were elected is being implemented by the cabinet,” Malala affirmed.<\/p>\n

“Therefore I am there to ensure that whatever we promised is implemented so that we can be politically accountable.”<\/p>\n

Malala noted that part of his role is to make sure that President Ruto’s reelection will be smooth sailing by first ensuring that all the promises made are delivered.<\/p>\n

“This is because at the end of the day in 2027 we shall go back to the people and the people will ask us to be accountable for our time,” he said.<\/p>\n

The former senator noted that while CSs are charged with the implementation of government programmes they must align them with Ruto’s campaign promises.<\/p>\n

“The Cabinet Secretaries will not be there campaigning because they won’t have resigned from their seats, they won’t even be allowed to campaign and it is us who will go to the people to seek for our reelection,'” he said.<\/p>\n

Malala said many people had misconceptualised the president’s decision to allow advisors to attend Cabinet meetings yet he has not even increased the ministries.<\/p>\n

“I would want to make this very clear that the president has not added any extra ministry in this country, We still have the ministries as enshrined in the Constitution,” he said.<\/p>\n

“What he has done is to ensure that when he is deliberating on important matters in his cabinet, he has his advisors there to advise him.”<\/p>\n

The opposition has claimed that the President contravened the law by allowing ‘strangers’ into the cabinet and vowed to challenge that in court.<\/p>\n

President Ruto last week cleared the way for Malala and advisors Monica Juma(Security) and David Ndii(Economy) to attend cabinet meetings.<\/p>\n
