Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has said Azimio leader Raila Odinga will be held responsible for the destruction of properties and loss of lives during the Saba Saba protest.<\/p>\n

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for nationwide rallies to mark Saba Saba Day and protest over the new tax measures imposed by President William Ruto. In a statement on Thursday, Cherargei said that the government will protect Kenyans.<\/p>\n

“Tomorrow the government shall protect the lives and property of the Kenyans from demos hooligans. Azimio-OKA demos organisers including Tinga should be held responsible for any loss of lives and property. Fanya fujo uone!” he said.<\/p>\n

Raila said the rally aims to force President William Ruto to repeal the Finance Act 2023. Some quotas have, however, been calling on the Opposition to call off the protests.<\/p>\n

Kikuyu Council of Elders led by national chairman Wachira Kiago urged Raila to abandon plans for demonstrations saying they may spark divisions in the country.<\/p>\n

“I’m humbly appealing to Raila Odinga and his team to stop the planned demonstrations and reach out to the government, we need peace and unity for the benefit of the country and our generations,” Kiago said. However, Mombasa County human rights activists said they will join Raila’s call and hold peaceful demos.<\/p>\n

Bradley Ouna, an activist at the Concern Citizen Kenya organisation said that the procession will start from Pembe za Ndovu to Treasury Square where they will hand over their petition to the county commander.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe gave a notification of the protest that will take place on Friday to the Central police OCS who was very cooperative and gave us the go-ahead to do the protest as we also celebrate the freedom fighters of this country especially those of second liberation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
