Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has urged residents to stop over-reliance on livestock keeping and instead diversify amid global climatic change. Speaking in Wajir town during the launch of the disbursement of Sh25 million micro-projects grant, which will be utilised by 3,700 beneficiaries, Abdullahi said climate change has caused livelihood disruption hence the need to think outside the box.<\/p>\n

Wajir is one of the beneficiary counties under the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP), a five-year, Government of Kenya project under the NEDI initiative. Beneficiaries of the funds have been organised into 185 Common Interest Groups (CIGs”.<\/p>\n

The objective of the funds is to support affected farmers and livestock-keeping households in restoring their productive assets, thus enhancing their adaptation and resilience.<\/p>\n

The grants will support the groups to purchase farm input packets under the value chains which include restocking, bee-keeping, sheep and goats, sorghum production, camel milk production and horticultural and fodder production.<\/p>\n

The magnitude of the drought led to huge animal loses which left many pastoralists destitute. Many are yet to recover from the loses. Abdullahi said there was need to come up with ways of reducing the impact of drought on both human and animals saying the goal will be achieved by fully supporting residents venture into crop farming.<\/p>\n

“Food security and climate resilience are critical issues in today’s world, as the impacts of climate change, such as droughts, floods and extreme weather conditions, seriously affect food production and distribution. Climate change has impacted food security by causing crop failures, reducing yields and affecting food prices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

“The situation that we find ourselves in is one that requires a lot of intervention since majority of our people are food insecure. Pastoralism is becoming unsustainable day by day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor said there are several steps that can be taken to increase food security and climate resilience, such as promoting sustainable agriculture practices.<\/p>\n

This includes the use of conservation tillage, cover crops and other techniques that help maintain soil health, reduce erosion and conserve water. The governor remained optimistic that the projects will be a success and will help to create a brighter future for communities in Wajir.<\/p>\n

“I would like to thank the government of Kenya, the World Bank, the KCSAP and ELRP teams and the farmers and community members who are participating in these projects. Your hard work and commitment are essential to their success,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Governor Abdullahi said water is a critical factor in food production and the adoption of water management practices, such as rainwater harvesting, can help ensure that crops have sufficient water during times of drought. ELRP has initiated the implementation of Livestock protection and rehabilitation in 13 wards in Wajir county.<\/p>\n

These Arbajahan, Ademisajida (Wajir west sub-county); Elnur-Tulatula and Lakoley South\/Basir (Eldas sub-county); Danaba and Gurar (Wajir North sub-county); Tarbaj and Wargadud (Tarbaj sub-county); Banane and Ibrahim Ure (Wajir South sub-county); Khorof Harar, Barwaqo and Township (Wajir East sub-county).<\/p>\n

Khorof Harar and Wargadud were adopted from KCSAP while Barwaqo and Township are additional wards. The second batch of funding, which will target 239 groups (equivalent to 4,785 households) with each receiving Sh250,000 through their respective Community Driven Development (CDD) model, totaling Sh59,750,000.<\/p>\n
