Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Nurses and midwives from Murang\u2019a county have undergone a six months training to reduce maternal deaths during delivery. The 68 health workers were trained by Jacaranda Health, an organisation that partners with governments to end preventable maternal and infants deaths, by helping to improve the quality of health care in public hospitals.<\/p>\n

The organisation\u2019s Deputy County Director Dr Job Makoyo said with 357 maternal deaths occurring out of every 1,000 deliveries in the country, the numbers are alarming and call for more efforts to address them.<\/p>\n

In Murang\u2019a, about 30 per cent of expectant mothers have been delivering at home, raising the number of both maternal and infant deaths. This prompted the county government to start a programme in March this year that issues stipends to expectant mothers to facilitate their travel to health facilities for ante-natal care and delivery.<\/p>\n

Each mother receives Sh1,000 in their seventh month, another Sh1,000 in their eighth and Sh2,000 for delivery, with Governor Irungu Kang\u2019ata saying many were choosing to give birth at home due to financial constraints.<\/p>\n

But Makoyo said intensive training of the health workers has had a positive impact in various parts of the country and that more mothers are now seeking health care at the right time, increasing ante-natal visits and family planning.<\/p>\n

About 90 per cent of providers now consistently perform key steps during deliveries which has reduced post-partum hemorrhage by about 20 per cent. \u201cOur government partners cost share 50 per cent of our mentorship programme. Our approach is also nationally endorsed with government partners investing resources to support critical improvements to service delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n

The organisation also operates a digital health system dubbed PROMPTS through which expectant mothers can access life-saving information through their mobile phones for free.<\/p>\n

The platform has seen more mothers attend the full course of antenatal care, improve breast feeding, access post-partum family planning and ensure their children are vaccinated at the right time.<\/p>\n

Makoyo said in the country, over 745 nurses and midwives have been trained in 21 counties and that better quality care can prevent 80 per cent of facility-based maternal deaths and a significant number of neo-natal deaths in Kenya.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn training, health workers are trained to use new innovations that equips them to best handle mothers in the maternity wards and their newborns, and encourage more to seek the services,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The County Executive Committee Member for Health Dr Fredrick Mbugua said about 90 per cent maternal deaths can be prevented. He said training health workers has helped reduce the mortality rate as only 14 were recorded in the county last year compared to the 19 who died in 2017.<\/p>\n

The 68 trainees, he added, are from 18 facilities in the county, and will help boost maternal health care in their respective hospitals. \u201cTraining is important and the impact can be seen. There were two years that our county registered zero maternal deaths. That is commendable,\u201d Mbugua said.<\/p>\n

Hambulle Mohamed, the chief community based distributor in the department of reproductive and maternal health under the Health ministry, expressed concerns that many deaths are caused by delays in health facilities.<\/p>\n

He cited incidences where mothers have passed away or given birth on road sides after being blocked from accessing health facilities by security guards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a need for security guards and other workers in health facilities to also be trained to change their reactions and stop them from following some life-endangering instructions by those in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n
