Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kiambu\u2019s Michael Karanga returned to local championships with victory at the Limuru Open, the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series at the par 72 Limuru Golf Club over the weekend.<\/p>\n

The series leader will be hoping to maintain top spot when he competes at the Coast Open, the Barry Cup, this weekend.<\/p>\n

Karanga fired a sumptuous final round of 68 gross to emerge the champion with an overall score of 3 under par 213, beating Godfrey Nsubuga to second by a shot at 2 under par 214 with Vipingo\u2019s Adel Balala completing the top three positions with 1 over par 217.<\/p>\n

He beat a field of 49 players who made the cut to the final round out of the 96 players who entered the tournament to record his fifth win in the KAGC series out of the eight tournaments he has participated in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was recently sponsored by the Union to participate at the R&A Amateur Championship and the experience I had is beneficial for the sport here in Kenya. I look forward to such tournaments in the future and defending my title next year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

KGU chairman Philip Ochola said: \u201cAs part of the KAGC calendar, the Limuru Open not only counts for the Kenya Amateur Ranking Points but also the Club Trophy Points and the World Amateur Golf Ranking Points.”<\/p>\n

“We currently have 18 Kenyans ranked in WAGR led by Michael Karanga on position 151 with 688 points. Adel, Elvis, Lejirma and Maara are also among the top 1000-ranked players in the world. We desire to see our players rise higher. This strengthens the profile of our players and the power of the tournaments,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The players are gearing up for the 103rd Coast Open ‘Barry Cup’ at Mombasa Golf Club next weekend.<\/p>\n
