Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Five rugby players from the current 18 in camp will be dropped from the squad ahead of the 7th edition of the Youth Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

Head coach Sarah Otieno expressed optimism that Team Kenya will live up to expectations at the championships set for August 4-11 in Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n

She was speaking during the girls’ first training at Moi Stadium, Kasarani where Team Kenya is camping for 10 days before departing to the South American continent.<\/p>\n

“We have 18 great players and we have had a good session with the girls. From this group, I will select 13 who will represent the country in the coming championships. I am optimistic we will have a good outing in Trinidad,” said Otieno, who is also the rugby development officer at Kenya Rugby Union (KRU).<\/p>\n

She added that her approach will be role-play for the players to grasp and understand the drills. The girls will undergo the kick-offs, scrums, line-outs, formations, and patterns training before jetting out.<\/p>\n

“The players are coming from various regions of the country and, therefore, we will use different approaches in drills to accommodate everyone. The target is to have a good and ready squad,” she said.<\/p>\n

Kenya have been pitted against Canada, Australia, and Fiji and the event will run on a round-robin format.<\/p>\n

She said their opponents tend to play a very fast game but she was unfazed about them despite this being Kenya’s first time in the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we broke camp in April, we gave the players some tasks to keep working and today, we wanted to ensure they have executed them. We have looked at the checks and balances of the to-do list from passing, ball reception, and runs,” Otieno pointed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs time goes by, we will work on defence patterns for players to understand what they need to do. There is a lot of learning towards the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTen days is a short time for preparation, so the coach says she will stick to the plan that was sent to teachers to work with while the girls were in school,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
