Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Political pundit Mutahi Ngunyi has weighed in on the prevailing political circus pitting President William Ruto’s government against his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n

Uhuru and his family have over the past few days been in the limelight after his security and that of former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta was withdrawn by the government.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, a visibly agitated Uhuru came out in defence of his family after a contingent of police officers went to his son’s residence in Karen purportedly to confiscate illegal guns.<\/p>\n

In Ngunyi’s opinion, this is nothing less than a supremacy contest of sorts and Ruto is determined to come out on top.<\/p>\n

“The bullfight between William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta is a fight between egos. But Uhuru should remember that the Presidency is a jealous institution,” he said in a statement on Twitter.<\/p>\n

“Taking the spotlight from Ruto does not sit well with the new President. He (Uhuru) should climb down,” he added.<\/p>\n

The genesis of Ruto and Uhuru’s latest feud seemingly emanated from anti-government protests called by Azimio under Raila Odinga’s leadership.<\/p>\n

Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua and their allies in the Kenya Kwanza government have claimed, without proof, that Uhuru is the chief financier of the protests.<\/p>\n

Uhuru has denied the claims saying he stands to gain nothing by sponsoring the demos and dared the government to go after him and leave his family out of their differences with him.<\/p>\n

“The issues that Kenyans are talking about have nothing to do with me. Have you seen me at any of those events? Have you seen me talk about any of those events? he posed.<\/p>\n

“I ask myself, what does this government want? If it wants me, the fact that I have been silent doesn’t mean that I’m scared, come for me,” Uhuru said at his son Jomo’s residence on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

The former President said it’s not a crime for him to talk to or associate himself with Raila, the mastermind of the anti-government protests.<\/p>\n

“I thought the only crime is to associate with terrorists, or are you telling me they are terrorists?”<\/p>\n

Uhuru said it’s his right to associate with whoever he wants in the spirit of democracy, some of which prompted him to peacefully hand over power to a government he never supported.<\/p>\n

“I may not have supported this government but I accepted the will of the people, you saw me in broad daylight…I did what I was supposed to do, what else do you want?”<\/p>\n

In a media interview with editors of leading media houses on Monday, Uhuru cautioned Ruto to tread carefully saying power is transient.<\/p>\n

“My advice to President Ruto is that power is fleeting and temporary, do the best for the country. It is your work to run the country, not me even if I did not support you. I did my best and handed over power when my term ended.”<\/p>\n
