Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The country expects a wheat harvest of more than 1.2 million bags of 100kgs this season, Agriculture PS Kello Harsama has said. He said this year\u2019s crop is good and the government together with millers and farmers have set buying prices for wheat to protect producers.<\/p>\n

A 100kg bag of grade one wheat will go for Sh5,200 and grade two will sell at Sh5,100. \u201cThis is under an agreement between the National Treasury, Ministry of Agriculture, Cereal Millers Association (CMA) and wheat farmers,\u201d the PS said.<\/p>\n

Under the agreement which was made in 2010, millers are supposed to mop up the entire local wheat production before they are allowed to import. The move is aimed at reducing import duty from 35 per cent to 10 per cent.<\/p>\n

\u201cCMA has agreed to buy the entire amount and after they have exhausted local production, they will be allowed to import another two million bags from other countries. This will help to meet the country\u2019s demand of about three million bags per year,\u201d Harsama said.<\/p>\n

The PS, however, pointed out that the Ukraine-Russia war is a big concern because Kenya used to import almost the entire supply of wheat from Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe war has affected the supply and wheat importers have to ensure that they get sustainable supply of the commodity from other alternative sources,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Cereal Growers Association CEO Antony Kioko said there has been a drop in acreage over the years. This is due to many factors including farmers dropping out of wheat farming because prices went down.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people gave up on wheat farming due to poor prices and increased cost of production. This normally eats into the margins of the farmers and those who cannot sustain it drop out,\u201d he added. Kioko urged the government to provide more support to help increase production.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf proper support is instituted or put in place, we should be able to see us importing less and less which is good for the economy. Every time we see a shipload of imported wheat, this is also imported poverty because it means lost jobs and more pressure on our foreign exchange,” he said.<\/p>\n

“There is nothing exciting about importing food which we can produce ourselves. We need to be able to produce as much as possible and reduce the importation bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Cereals and Produce Board is providing post-harvest solutions to wheat farmers to minimise losses. NCPB managing director Joseph Kimote said the move is also aimed at maintaining good wheat quality standards, and enhancing food safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cWheat farmers who are currently harvesting in Narok are invited to utilise NCPB facilities to access affordable and professional services in wheat drying, cleaning, grading, silos storage and weighing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kimote said all the services are affordable and are aimed at supporting farmers to alleviate post-harvest challenges like wet grains, lack of storage, use of unsafe drying methods, and poor quality grains that lead to poor market prices.<\/p>\n

This is in addition to use of unstandardised weighbridges, which do not reflect accurate weights of wheat and defraud farmers of the true value of their grain. He encouraged farmers to come together or aggregate their wheat so it can be dried collectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cFarmers who use NCPB storage facilities will benefit from safe storage as well as have the wheat marketed on their behalf. The board has both conventional stores and Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) intake facilities,\u201d Kimote said.<\/p>\n
