Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested a senior officer of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company for allegedly demanding a Sh50,000 bribe, which he later reduced to Sh25,000.<\/p>\n

Filing a report with the Commission, the complainant said the money was demanded to facilitate the reconnection of the water supply to a residential building at Kahawa West.<\/p>\n

The building needs water in 17 units which were constructed between February 2017 and December 2022.<\/p>\n

According to a contract between the complainant and his clients, the company was supposed to provide after-service maintenance of the building for two and half years after the completion of the project.<\/p>\n

He told the EACC that they had been paying exaggerated water bills to the water company arising from faulty water meters managed by the said company.<\/p>\n

This prompted them to engage with officials at the Meter Reader Division of Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO) to replace the faulty water meter with a new one.<\/p>\n

The officials are said to have accepted to replace the meter after confirming that it was indeed faulty.<\/p>\n

The complaint claimed that the officials however demanded that the complainant pays a facilitation fee of Sh25,000, failure to which the repairs will not be done.<\/p>\n

The officials were paid the demanded money after which they replaced the meter on Thursday, July 27, 2023.<\/p>\n

EACC heard that after the meter was replaced, another team from NAWASCO led by the arrested suspect went to the site and demanded that the complainant pays arrears of Sh17,000 as indicated in the previous fault meter.<\/p>\n

The complainant said he paid the amount.<\/p>\n

He however claimed that on Friday the same officer went back to the site and disconnected the water in the entire building.<\/p>\n

He allegedly claimed that NAWASCO had discovered a new pending bill of Sh100,000 based on the previous faulty meter.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the suspect summoned the complainant to appear before him in his office in Pangani.<\/p>\n

When the complainant went to the official’s office, he allegedly threatened to increase the pending water bill to Sh240,000 if the complainant did not pay him Sh250,000.<\/p>\n

The complainant is said to have pleaded with the suspect to reduce the amount which was downsized to Sh25,000.<\/p>\n

The suspect allegedly instructed the complainant to call him when ready with the cash so that he could instruct his juniors to reconnect the water immediately.<\/p>\n

The complainant then reported the matter to EACC prompting the Commission to begin investigations into the matter.<\/p>\n

He was arrested in Kariobangi South, where the suspect had gone to meet the complainant, after receiving the amount.<\/p>\n

He was then escorted to Integrity Centre Police Station where he was processed and booked at Kilimani Police Station.<\/p>\n
