Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera has said there’s a need to reform the structure of the Ministry of Education. Nabwera said the structure needs to be reformed such that it addresses the issue of inequality.<\/p>\n

He said the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms report that was released on Tuesday has not addressed the issue of inequality in the delivery of the curriculum.<\/p>\n

“Even up to where we are, the digit distribution in the country is a mess. There are counties with excess teachers and some with a deficit of close to 10,000 teachers,” he said.<\/p>\n

Nabwera spoke on Wednesday during an interview with Citizen TV. He questioned whether the report will address the issue of the higher education funding model.<\/p>\n

“If today equality has not yet been achieved in funding secondary schools that give birth to university students and the issue has not been addressed, how then will it be achieved in universities,” he said.<\/p>\n

He also claimed in this year’s KUCCPS placement there was no uniformity in the delivery of courses. “You find that for instance, medicine as a course has different costs in different universities,” Nabwera said.<\/p>\n

The MP emphasised that the structure should also address the most basic principle of how much an economy can accommodate in terms of public universities.<\/p>\n

“We have saturated the country with public universities and yet the economy cannot fund them,” he said. This, he said, is why most public universities have problems with finances.<\/p>\n
