Africa-Press – Lesotho. Chinese Medical Team sent tribute to Lesotho as they departed to Angola on a mission to fight against Covid-19 pandemic on Monday. The team arrived on September 27th
as sent by the People’s Republic of China government to Lesotho and Angola to help the two countries battle Covid-19. Speaking at the farewell ceremony,
Chinese Medical Experts Team Leader, Dr. Liu Zheng directed warm remarks to the Ministry of Health (MoH). He said they are grateful to have been offered a
chance to assist Local Medical Health Workers. He commended Lesotho by working closely with the World Health Organisation (WHO). Zheng stated that the government
of Lesotho has put all efforts to fight against Covid-19 and has set-up nuclear acid textured department in the National Reference Laboratory and set-up two
designated hospitals for Covid-19 patients. He said the main problem is shortage of health workers and nuclear acid. “Lack of clinical equipment and the level
of treatment to critical patients need massive improvement and there is still a need for more work at community epidemic control,” he observed. He suggested
that all different government departments and ministries should join hands in the fight against the pandemic. The Team Leader said the government should emphasise the social isolation and community isolation, saying, “before
we get the vaccine for treating this pandemic, isolation is the first remedy to beat Covid-19. We recommend that you pay more efforts to community work, do
more screening, administration of confirmed cases and those with fever symptoms cannot be omitted from suspected cases and those who have been in contact with
confirmed cases. Increase the amount of testing samples and increase more stuff in the testing areas,” Zheng advised. He furthered that patients should be
treated depending on different levels, so that milder patients are placed in normal hospitals and critical ones into the designated hospitals for critical
patients. “The most important part is to improve the level of medical equipment (oxygen supplies), and you should complete the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
equipment. Emphasise control and prevention in hospitals and set-up fever clinic, separate it from normal clinic. Lastly separate isolation room from ICU
department according to three areas and two channels”. The Head of Family Health Dr. Makhoase Ranyali said she has been with the medical team since their arrival and the
team gave a briefing to the ministry. She said on Tuesday, they visited Berea hospital and Mafeteng Hospital the following day. “In Berea and Maseru the team
shared their experience on the treatment and diagnosis on Covid-19,” she shared. Ranyali said they also visited WHO and the National Reference Laboratory.
The Minister of Health Hon. Motlatsi Maqelepo said he has been in constant contact with the team while moving around the country. He said the greatest challenge is that Lesotho never
invested much in the health sector, however, he promised they will improve in order to have a reliable health system. “We highly appreciate your presence
and the equipment you brought along. We promise to utilise everything we have learnt from you,” he added. Basotho blankets were given to Chinese doctors as a token of appreciation.
