Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Mphake family of three living in Liphakoeng village, Ha Ramabanta is set to have a two-roomed house and a ventilated improved pit latrine built through the assistance of Habitat for Humanity Lesotho. According to a presser by Habitat for Humanity, the house and a latrine will be built in partnership with 22 students from the University of Wittenberg USA (United States of America) led by Dr.

Scott Rosenberg, a Professor of African History at the same university. The team arrived in the country on Wednesday and is expected to begin the construction tomorrow (Friday 17th) until 22nd June 2022. The release indicates that ‘Maletsema (41) and her brother Lebohang (46) Mphake lived with ‘Maletsema’s 7 year old son in a
small remote hamlet named Ha Sebinane. The siblings were the only residents left in that village as all dwellers migrated to other areas which have access to services such as water, clinics and roads. Following the collapse of their home at Ha Sebinane, the area Chief Masupha Api, coerced the siblings to migrate to his village

called Liphakoeng. In his words, the area chief noted that as the siblings were isolated in a remote area, coupled with a myriad of health challenges, he felt

sending help to rebuild their home would be more challenging as opposed to migrating them to his village. As a result, the Mphake siblings were allotted

land with security of tenure on which they erected a shelter made of tree branches with corrugated iron roofing where they currently live. Chief Masupha also noted that the Mphake family is much more within reach in the event of need and closer to health services among others,” “The tree branch shack that the Mphake family is living in is inhabitable thus posing a serious threat to their health and wellbeing. Considering that both Lebohang and ‘Maletsema are mentally challenged and ‘Maletsema also has a speech impairment, they could easily be exposed to fire hazard especially when they make fire inside their shack for warmth during cold winter season. ‘Maletsema’s 7 year old son is in grade 2 and the family survives on his Child Grant of M350.00 that he receives quarterly from the Ministry of Social Development.
A safe and decent place to call home is what this family urgently needs,” the presser continues.
