Africa-Press – Lesotho. THE Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has warned that oysters from Aquapark 4 at the north Walvis Bay production area (salt pan) are unsafe for consumption.
According to a statement released by the ministry’s executive director Annely Haiphene, the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) took a sample of an oyster at the area and tested it for microbiological contamination recently. Haiphene said NSI took the sample as part of the national shellfish sanitation programme.
“The test results from the oyster samples that were submitted for testing indicate positive presence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and, therefore, it is potentially unsafe to consume oysters until further notice by the ministry,” Haiphene said. Vibrio parahaemolyticus can be destroyed by properly cooking the oysters, she said.
