Africa-Press – Lesotho. VODACOM Lesotho Foundation (VLF) on Tuesday injected M300 000 into the Resource Centre for the Blind (RCB). Vodacom Lesotho Foundation Chairman, John Matlosa, said the critical intervention was a clear sign that they want to stay the course in their social contract with the Basotho nation.
He said they also want to bring in other partners and diversify their funding envelope to increase and amplify the impact of their interventions. Matlosa said the contributions are aimed at plugging the funding gap in social causes as third sector funding is increasingly declining globally in line with the global economic downturn.
Private sector organisations are therefore challenged to step in to partner with government, civil society, philanthropists and development partners to offer the much-needed social safety nets, he said.
Matlosa said Vodacom Lesotho Foundation has recently forged relations with UNICEF Lesotho, the Roger Federer Foundation and the Global Partnership for Education to contribute to projects in support of child safety, early childhood education and girl coding, among others.
On behalf of the Ministry of Education ‘Mapaballo Setlaba, manager special education said it is every child’s right to get an education. “The quality education is given as the formal education to make sure that every child should have an education,” Setlaba said.
Setlaba said the Ministry of Education wants every child to get inclusive education that it could use to earn a living. She said they want to see the classroom windows always fixed and in good condition so that children are safe.
Kimanzi Muthengi who is the Deputy Representative of UNICEF said they are supporting the government of Lesotho through the Ministry of Education in advancing the rights of children with disabilities.
“Children with disabilities in Lesotho face multiple challenges including accessibility of quality education, water sanitation, child protection and surface nutrition,” Muthengi said.
