Africa-Press – Lesotho. A South African traffic cop suspected to be an accomplice in the murder of a Chinese businessman who was allegedly robbed M30 million is expected to appear before the Wepener Magistrate’s Court on May 26.
The accused appeared before the same court yesterday on charges of murder, robbery and kidnapping. He is alleged to have been in cahoots with other suspects from Maseru and Mafeteng who remain at large.
It is alleged that sometime last month, the deceased who operated a number of businesses in Lesotho was transport the huge sum of money to a bank in South Africa when he was stopped somewhere in Wepener by the accused traffic cop.
It is further alleged that as soon as his vehicle stopped, armed men appeared out of nowhere and pounced on the deceased man. The suspects allegedly disarmed the Chinese man and robbed him of cash to the tune of M30 million before they shot him dead.
The dead man’s vehicle was later found in ashes at another place. It is further alleged that one of the elusive suspects is the husband of a top Lesotho judicial officer.
Police spokesperson of the Smithfield Policing Precinct Sergeant Yanga Ngcukana said a post-mortem report has revealed that the deceased had a single gunshot wound to the head. Police believe that the suspects torched the dead man’s vehicle after ditching it.
