Alliance donates compactor cleaning trucks to MCC

Africa-Press – Lesotho. Alliance Insurance Group officially last Friday handed over two brand-new compactor cleaning trucks to the Maseru City Council (MCC) worth M5 million.

The donation, part of Alliance’s corporate social responsibility initiative, is aimed at improving the cleanliness and overall sanitation of the capital city.

The compactor trucks will enhance garbage collection and street cleaning efforts across Maseru, especially in high-traffic and underserved areas.

In his acceptance speech, The Right Honourable Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane expressed gratitude for the timely donation and emphasised the importance of private-public partnerships in national development.

Matekane said the Government of Lesotho is committed to keeping the country clean, adding that it is by working together as a nation that we can promote cleanliness and improve our surroundings.

“Today marks a new chapter in our fight for a cleaner and healthier Maseru. We thank Alliance Insurance for leading by example in giving back to the people. Waste management is not just about keeping our streets clean, it is about dignity, safety, and economic progress,” he said.

He highlighted that a clean country means people’s health is protected and that it also helps attract tourists and investors to Lesotho.

Matekane added that another key aspect of managing waste is job creation, and that by reusing and recycling waste, “We expect the youth to take this opportunity, be innovative, and create jobs for themselves, as it is one of the ways we can respond to the lack of jobs in the country.”

“These trucks will make a huge difference in our city. They are a symbol of what we can achieve when we work together as government, business, and citizens alike. We must now take this opportunity seriously. Let us protect these trucks, maintain them, and use them effectively. This is not just a donation, it is a challenge to us all to do better and be better.”

The Prime Minister urged Maseru residents to actively support MCC’s efforts by refraining from littering, sorting waste where possible, and holding each other accountable for the upkeep of their communities.

Speaking during the event, the Mayor of Maseru, Motlalepula Sepipi, appreciated Alliance Insurance and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to maximising the use of the new equipment.

“To maintain cleanliness is one of MCC’s biggest mandates, and that is why the office exists in the first place. We also align with Sustainable Development Goal SDG 11, which focuses on keeping cities and the environment clean,” said Sepipi.

He added that they have a project called Hlabahlabane, which carries out cleaning campaigns monthly. “This donation is a game-changer for our operations. We assure you these trucks will be put to good use in daily cleaning and waste collection,” he said.

Alliance’s Head of Group Marketing and Corporate Communications, ’Makeabetsoe Mabaleha, said in 2019, Alliance launched a new project called the U-mang Funeral Policy (originally launched in 2018), which is connected to all the 10 districts of Lesotho. She added that the policy has an U-mang Plough Back system.

“With the same policy, we ensured that with every client joining, we take just a little amount to ensure that we give back to communities,” said Mabaleha.

She cited a few recent donations they made using the same policy, including giving wheelchairs to the Government of Lesotho and donating stationery to local chiefs.

Mabaleha noted that Alliance remains committed to sustainable development and will continue supporting initiatives that impact society positively.

“We believe a clean environment is a human right. These trucks represent our small contribution toward that goal. We look forward to seeing them drive change literally and figuratively on the streets of Maseru,” she said.
