LHDA To Receive Second Tunnel Boring Machine

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) will, this coming Saturday, June 28, 2025, officially welcome the second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at the Caledonspoort Border Post, marking a significant milestone in the construction of the 38km Polihali Transfer Tunnel.

According to LHDA, the arrival of this second TBM signals a major step forward in the project. It is expected to commence excavation works at the Polihali site by September 2025, advancing the tunnel construction process and bringing the project closer to completion.

The first TBM was received on September 4, 2024, at the same border post. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko; South African High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ms. Constance Seoposengwe; LHDA Chief Executive, Mr. Tente Tente; members of the LHDA Board of Directors; and representatives from the Lesotho Highlands Water Commission (LHWC).

Speaking at the previous welcoming ceremony, Mr. Tente emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “Today marks a major milestone and a historic moment for Lesotho.” He noted that the first TBM had departed Shanghai, China, on July 30, 2024, and arrived at Durban Harbor on August 27, 2024.
