Africa-Press – Lesotho. Samuel Eto’o finds himself once again at the center of controversy, this time over allegations of embezzlement involving the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), which he has presided over since 2021.
According to reports in the Cameroonian press, following a friendly match between Cameroon and Russia in October 2023, the Russian Football Federation allegedly transferred payment not to FECAFOOT, but to a private bank account — reportedly belonging to Samuel Eto’o himself.
Documents leaked on social media appear to confirm wire transfers to a personal account based in Qatar. In response, FECAFOOT released a statement claiming it had authorized the use of Samuel Eto’o’s personal account due to international sanctions against Russia, which have affected SWIFT transactions since the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and further intensified in 2022. According to the federation, the use of an account in Qatar was seen as a secure workaround.
However, this explanation has sparked widespread skepticism in Cameroon. Several media outlets and analysts have questioned why the money was never received by FECAFOOT and why such a solution would be necessary in the first place. For Eto’o, already facing mounting criticism over his leadership and previous controversies, this new scandal only deepens the crisis surrounding his presidency.
