Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Road Transport Board is still tight-lipped about the new prices list for transport fares in which new prices were supposed to have been implemented on July 01.
The Maseru Region Transport Operators (MRTO) Chairperson Mr. Mokete Jonase told the Agency on Saturday saying that to date the Board has not said anything.
Public transport operators across the country had proposed an increase of local fares by M2 to M15 from the current M13. The new prices including those for long distance were expected to take effect from July 01 but nothing so far.
He said they even approached the Ministry of Public Works and Transport Principal Secretary who informed them that they (ministry) have engaged a consultant to determine how public transport fares should work. He said the Principal Secretary requested that transport operators should give the Consultant until November to December to complete the work.
Therefore, Mr. Jonase indicated that as MRTO, a mother body to the transport sector, they have organized consultations with routes from south, north and central regions between 25 and 28 September to map the way forward.
He mentioned that this has taken too long especially since the last fare increment was in 2023 saying if they have to wait for the consultant, it means that the new prices will be implemented next year thus two years without an increase.
