Senate Adopts Key Reports to Enhance Citizen Welfare

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Senate has today adopted several Reports from House committees, all aimed at improving the lives of Basotho. Among the most notable is the Report on the Lesotho Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to regulate citizenship matters with a focus on national integrity and governance.

According to the Chairperson of the Committee, Senator Seabata Motsamai, the primary aim of the Bill is to safeguard national interests by ensuring that individuals occupying key positions in government demonstrate full allegiance to Lesotho.

The Bill introduces a distinction between indigenous citizens by birth and those who acquired citizenship through naturalisation or registration. It explicitly bars naturalised citizens from holding high-level offices such as Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal, Speaker of the National Assembly, and President of the Senate.

Senator Motsamai emphasized that the Bill aligns with the provisions of the Constitution of Lesotho and other relevant laws, and therefore has been deemed fit for adoption.

The Senate also adopted the Report on the Workmen’s Compensation Act, the principal legislation governing compensation for workers injured or deceased while performing their duties.
