Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Liberia Football Association (LFA) with support from FIFA through the FIFA Forward Development Program has officially inaugurated the newly renovated Gompa Pitch in Ganta, Nimba County.
The ceremony was held on Monday, 29 September, marking a renewed commitment to developing football infrastructure across the country. The standard-size, FIFA-approved artificial playing surface will host various LFA competitions, including grassroots tournaments, as part of the LFA’s broader infrastructure development drive.
The renovation work includes major upgrades to the existing stadium, such as the installation of floodlights, an underground sprinkler system, improved fencing, and roofing for spectator stands.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, LFA President Mustapha Raji expressed gratitude to FIFA for its continued partnership and investment in Liberia’s football development. He also acknowledged the local authorities and football stakeholders in Nimba County for their patience and support throughout the renovation process.
“When we took over in 2018, we assured you and committed ourselves to football development, decentralizing the game, promoting transparency, reform, and good governance. Today, the evidence is clear in what we have achieved. Let us all remain patient—football will continue to develop, we will build more infrastructure, and the future is brighter for our upcoming national teams,” Raji said.
Also speaking at the event, FIFA’s Development Manager for West and Central Africa El Hadji Diop praised Liberia’s progress under the Forward Programme and reaffirmed FIFA’s continued support to football infrastructure development in Liberia.
“It is an honor and a great achievement to see this pitch here in Gompa after few years, when we started the process. This is not just a pitch, it’s a symbol. In FIFA, we believe that developing football is a process that involves several actors and it relies on three pillars, infrastructure, training and coaching and competitions, therefore FIFA, LFA and the government has a role to play,” Diop said.
Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono commended the LFA for its commitment to football development and highlighted the importance of such projects for youth development.
House Speaker Richard Koon, who also delivered a statement at the ceremony, also praised the LFA for the development of football in Liberia emphasized the role of sports in national unity and pledged legislative backing for continued investment in sports infrastructure.
