Africa-Press – Lesotho. The National Assembly will host the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum (PF) next month. This was revealed by the Speaker of the National Assembly
Sephiri Motanyane in Maseru at the press briefing on Wednesday. Motanyane launched the 50th virtual plenary of the SADC PF which is expected to run from December 10 to 12.
Lesotho first hosted the SADC PF in 2003. It is celebrated under the New Era of Democracy Towards Consolidating the Vibrant Voices of SADC Parliamentarians theme.
This theme the Speaker said it will allow SADC Parliamentarians to “reflect and take stock of the Forum’s milestones while mapping the future as a newly established Parliament”.
“I wish to assure you all that the Parliament of Lesotho is ready and committed to hosting the 50th Plenary Assembly Session virtually,
and to making this event not only a success but also a memorable one to all delegates and the Basotho nation,” said Motanyane. The Speaker said the members discuss and debate myriad
issues ranging from economic, political and socio-cultural issues within the member states. Each member state has the representation of five members of parliament (MPs) in the SADC PF.
Motanyane had also charged the Lesotho representatives in the SADC PF to spread the awareness of this parliament to different media outlets. On some of the benefits derived by the members of this
regional parliament include the platform to exchange ideas and borrow leaf in the books of other member states, the Clerk of the National Assembly Advocate
Lebohang Maema King’s Counsel (KC) had said. This parliament sits twice annually and the host is by rotation. Lesotho representatives are Hon. ‘Matlhohonolofatso
Tšepang Tšita Mosena who is also an executive member, Senator Peete Lesaoana Peete, Hon. Lekhetho Mosito, Hon. Mphosi Nkhasi and Hon. Ntšalla Mafa. Lesotho has had its members serving at the echelons of
this parliament. The former Speaker of the National Assembly Ntlhoi Motsamai had from 2002 to 2004 served as SADC PF President and Nthekeleng Mofolo had served as the Vice President from 2012-2014. SADC PF was established in 1997.
