Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Smallholders Agriculture Development Project (SADP) within the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security distributed inputs to 40 youth representatives across all districts in Maseru on Thursday.
Handing over the inputs, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Thabo Mofosi, stated that the goal of providing inputs to youth is to combat unemployment, as they believe that youth who receive inputs will also employ others.
Mr. Mofosi added that young people will not undertake this effort alone, as the Ministry plans to visit them to ensure the inputs are used appropriately.
He concluded by expressing his hope to find everything in order, since the Ministry handed over all necessary materials to the youth.
One of the recipients Youth Steven Mohobela from Peka in Leribe, appreciated the effort of the SADP, adding that the inputs will make a huge difference in their different fields they are all going to employ others or work as teams to change their lives.
Meanwhile, District Agricultural Officer Mr. Thabo Sekhonyana explained that the initiative aims to supply inputs to 1000 youth, with 100 from each district.
He further explained that cabbage producers will receive 2000 cabbage sprouts, along with fertilizers and pesticides. Chicken meat producers will be supplied with 200 chickens each, 4 bags of boiler grower feed, 4 bags of finisher feed, and 30 bags of potatoes, each weighing 25kg.
He concluded by noting that youth who are already chicken egg producers will receive 25 bags of layer feed, with five recipients from each district.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security launched this project following the Prime Minister’s directive that each ministry intensify efforts to combat unemployment.
