Africa-Press – Lesotho. Government of Lesotho, through the Ministry of Law and Justice, in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and Lerotholi Polytechnic has officially launched a Project on Technologies for Community Development.
The initiative marks a major step toward promoting inclusive development, technological empowerment, and institutional innovation across the country.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi said the project aims to make use of intellectual property systems and patent information to identify, adapt, and implement technologies that meet the needs of local communities.
Minister Ramoeletsi highlighted that the project is designed to strengthen innovation and support community driven solutions.
He mentioned that Lerotholi Polytechnic has been selected as the Partner Institution responsible for technical implementation under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Law and Justice.
“This initiative will not only deliver demonstration ready prototypes tailored to community needs but also build a foundation for future replication, commercialisation and policy integration,” he noted.
Head of Coordination Unit, Division for External Offices, LDCs, LLDCs, SIDs Coordination, Regional and National Development Sector WIPO, Mr. Purevdorg Vaanchig, said the project represents WIPO’s commitment to helping least developed countries use intellectual property for economic and social development. He noted that Lesotho is among the first countries to benefit from the newly revised project model, which focuses on community needs and measurable outcomes.
Mr.Vaanchig added that the project will strengthen local research institutions and support the development of a practical snow-clearing technology to improve access to services in affected highland communities.
