Africa-Press – Lesotho. Lesotho struggles to address rural poverty and to foster inclusive social development, with the economy relying heavily on agriculture.

This is according to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Lesotho, stating that 56 percent of households cannot afford nutritious diet while poor households lack resilience against economic shocks and are trapped in a cycle of low investment, productivity and income.

In affirmation to this, Peka Constituency through its Member of Parliament is engaging different community sectors into the ongoing poultry project which commenced last month.

Speaking in an interview with the Agency on Friday, Media Representative for RFP Peka Constituency Mr. Letlatsa Lipholo said the project is in accordance with the speech made by Prime Minister Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane in June 2025, announcing that the government outlined plans to create no fewer than 70,000 jobs through labour intensive initiatives in key sectors such as agriculture, tourism and manufacturing to mention a few hence the poultry project.

He said the purpose of the project is to create employment and overcome hunger within the constituency.

Mr. Lipholo mentioned that apart from youth having commenced with the project, about 56 churches within the constituency have also received 100 chickens each church, poultry feed including starter, grower, finisher, stress pack, paraffin and feeding utensils since last week.

“Each church received two bags of starter, grower and finisher,” he stated.

Lipholo said likewise the churches are expected to generate their own income through the project and adhere to its sustainability.

Moreover, he said they opted to include the churches as other community members feel accommodated in their churches rather than with other community members.

He said the 56 churches were selected with the assistance of community councilors.

However, he said they are still aimed at having a big poultry factory which is expected to sell chickens to the whole country.

Apart from churches he said the Member of Parliament gave out 200 chickens to RFP Peka Constituency Committee, RFP Peka Constituency Youth committee, Women’s committee and Men’s committee.

He said each committee has also been allocated chicken feed, paraffin and stress packs.

The Community Councilor of Ha Kotola, Mr. Ketso Ramoepane said the project is beneficial, saying they are happy it is expanding even to churches.

Referring to youth he said since the commencement of the project youth have refrained from criminal activities.

He said mainly the boys are involved in many criminal acts but since then the project has kept them busy, away from the streets.

The key employment initiatives by the Prime Minister, Mr. Sam Matekane in June 2025 include that youth unemployment which nearly affects 49 percent of young people would be treated as a national crisis prompting urgent targeted interventions hence the poultry project.

This is the first project of its kind within Peka constituency.
