Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition has finally established a quarantine site at Ha Foso for livestock which had been reported stolen and found at a farm of a certain Afrikaner in South Africa.
This was revealed by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition Mr. Thabo Mofosi in the National Assembly on Tuesday, when responding to an urgent question of a Member of Parliament Mrs. Mabafokeng Mpobole regarding the Ministry’s efforts to return Basotho livestock, as owners might eventually lose them due to foot and mouth restrictions between the two countries.
Mr. Mofosi said his Ministry is addressing this matter in collaboration with that of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, assuring that the animals will be returned on December 06 (Saturday) and will be kept at the above-mentioned quarantine palace to safely hold them for requisite periods before returning it to their rightful owners.
However, he said there is currently no law within the Ministry which provides compensations for Basotho who incur costs on livestock death amongst others, saying the Ministry is on the edge of completing some regulations which include the issue of compensations in times of crisis.
“We also hope our partners, such as Food and Agriculture Organization would provide a helping hand” he added.
