Moyeni Hosts First Quthing Marathon with 250 Athletes

Africa-Press – Lesotho. More than 250 athletes from districts across Lesotho participated in the inaugural Moyeni Athletics Marathon, held in Quthing town on Saturday. The marathon, funded to the tune of M250,000 by local banks and traders, was organized by Hillbusterz Athletics Club in collaboration with Kubung Hotel.

Organizers said the event aims to become an annual fixture, encouraging youth participation in athletics and promoting healthy lifestyles. Races were contested over 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km distances.

Winners in men’s, women’s, and junior categories received cash prizes from M2 500.00 to M500.00 and gold medals, while all participants were awarded medals in recognition of their efforts.

In an interview at the award presentation ceremony held at Liphakoe Football Ground in Upper Moyeni, Quthing District Police Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner of Police Adv. Seabata Tutuoane, who also took part in the race, emphasized the marathon’s role in promoting good health and keeping young people engaged in positive activities away from crime.

Federation of Athletics Lesotho Secretary, Mr. Khauta Makhoana, highlighted the importance of such events in attracting youth to sports and steering them away from alcohol and drug abuse, which remain pressing challenges in the country.

Deputy President of Hillbusterz Athletics Club, Mr. Hlomphang Nkalai, said the marathon was designed to inspire young athletes to compete, win, and develop interest in national and international competitions.

He commended sponsors for their support and appealed to more traders to contribute, noting that expanding prize categories from five to ten would attract even greater participation.

Participant Miss Khauhelo Lekhooa praised the organizers, saying the marathon reflects the district’s growth in sports and urged both youth and adults to begin preparing for next year’s event.

She also encouraged the community to attend in large numbers to cheer on runners and celebrate winners. Athletics, she added, play a vital role in improving health and fitness, relieving stress, boosting confidence, building discipline, and strengthening mental resilience. Competitions also foster connections among athletes, allowing them to share experiences and build healthy relationships.
