Mafeteng district ranks number one of the 10 districts in the Lesotho General Certificate in Secondary Education (LGCSE) 2025 results for three consecutive years with 67.9 percent which is 3.12 percent increase from 2024 as it attained same position with 64.6 percent.

This surfaced at the press briefing to announce the 2025 LGCSE results by the Minister of Education and Training Professor Ntoi Rapapa on Monday in Maseru.

In second position is Qacha’s Nek with 64.8 percent followed by Leribe with 64.4 percent and Botha-Bothe in fourth position with 62.3 percent. While in fifth position is Maseru with 61.3 percent followed by Thaba-Tseka, Berea, Mohale’s Hoek, Mokhotlong and Quthing is still the last with 39.4 percent a decrease from 44.9 percent in 2024.

In his remarks, Prof. Rapapa said there is an overall 61.1 percent pass rate, from 61.0 percent in 2024.

He mentioned that 21 304 students registered for examinations and 21 117 sat for the examinations in 2025, an increase from 18,333 in 2024 saying about 187 students did not write.

He said that 1007 students are top achievers, an increase as opposed to 662 in 2024 saying they are all from different schools.

On the other hand, the well-performed core subjects are Sesotho, coming second is Physical Science, English Language and Mathematics respectively. “On overall Sesotho came top with 70.2%, followed by Physical Science with 31.2%, English came third with 18.2% and Mathematics fourth with 12.3% with both English and Mathematics showing a decline,” he said.

Moreover, he mentioned the top five best performing schools include, Leribe English Medium School with 29.0%, St. Stephen’s Diocesan High School came second with 25.6% followed by Lesotho High School 23.2%, Kingsgate High School with 20.2% and Methodist High School with 18.4%.

The top student with nine A* is Katiba Katiso from St. Stephen’s Diocesan High School. While other top achievers with seven A* are two students Busisiwe Lehoka from St. Stephen’s High School and Jabuliziwe Sekholoane from Leribe English Medium. They are followed by Likano Malatsa from Seeiso Griffiths High School, Thabelo Mohapi from Leqele High School, Khabisi Phatsisi from Sacred Heart High School and Karabo Shao from Leqele High School with six A*

The top 4 are Mariam Monnapula, Bafokeng Mpitso both from Lesotho High School, Lets’abisa Mots’oanakaba and Tsotang Nkuebe both from Leqele High School and Tlhokomelo Tai-Tai from Leribe English Medium with five A*.

On the other hand, Minister Rapapa indicated that for Lesotho Advanced Secondary Certificate (LASC) which was being piloted in 2025 for the first time in all districts though some students did not sit for examinations. He said a total of 26 students from schools such as New Millennium English Medium, St. James Mokhotlong, St. Barnabas, ‘Malithuso, Makhaola and Ntaote sat for the LASC with St. James High School topping other schools with 42.5%, followed by St. Barnabas High School with 26.7% and New Millennium in third position with 18.2%.

The top achievers for LASC are all from St. James High School Mokhotlong with Tsebanang ‘Neko being top one with five A*, followed by Reabetsoe Kobile, Boitumelo Mokunyane and Keketso Posholi all as top two with three A*.

Minister Rapapa congratulated all the students who performed well and encouraged those who did not pass not to lose hope and work hard so that they get better results in the future.

He thanked the Ministry of Social Development for unwavering support to students as well as parents, schools and teachers. He further commended ECOL for conducting examinations with transparency.

Meanwhile, Standard Lesotho Bank awarded prizes to the 26 top achievers of certificates, trophies and cheques with top one going home with a cheque of M3,000, certificate and trophy while other prizes ranged from M2,500 to M1,000 with certificates and trophies.

The results will be officially available through SMSes on both Vodacom Lesotho (52222) and Econet Lesotho (30004), on Lesotho government’s website and ministry of education as wel
l as ECOL’s websites on Monday.
