HA MATLALI TO LEBAKENG ROAD PROJECT RESERVES 50% OF JOBS FOR YOUTH

Maseru, Jan. 26 — The Roads Directorate says the Ha Matlali to Lebakeng road upgrade project has been structured to maximise employment opportunities for local communities, particularly young people.

Speaking on the project, Director for Road Network Development, Mr. Linehella Ntsére, said at least 50 percent of all jobs created will be reserved for youth aged between 18 and 35 years, while 85 percent of the total workforce will comprise unskilled labourers drawn from surrounding communities.

Mr. Ntsére explained that the Directorate has restricted the issuing of work permits to foreign workers in order to ensure that locals benefit directly from the project. He noted that lessons were learnt from previous infrastructure projects where contractors brought in their own workers, depriving community members of employment opportunities meant for them.

He further highlighted that the Roads Directorate is also addressing social risks associated with large construction projects, particularly the exploitation of women and girls. Mr. Ntsére said awareness campaigns have been designed and integrated into the project to educate women and girls on challenges that often arise during such developments.

These campaigns will focus on issues such as HIV and AIDS, unwanted pregnancies, and other forms of social vulnerability, with the aim of empowering communities and promoting safe, responsible conduct throughout the project’s lifespan.

The Ha Matlali–Lebakeng road upgrade is expected to improve access, stimulate local economic activity and create much-needed employment, while ensuring that social safeguards are in place to protect affected communities.
