VISUALLY IMPAIRED CHILDREN NEED NECESSARY TOOLS – TAMAKO

Maseru, Feb. 11 — The Principal of St. Bernadette Resource Centre for the Blind says with necessary tools and instilling confidence, children with visual impairment can navigate the world independently.

Talking about the centre, the Principal indicated that with support of the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), the school has for many years now been breaking down education barriers by providing essential services to children with visual impairment.

Amongst others, she explained that the centre seeks to also ensure that the government attains Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) in line with inclusive, quality and accessible education, this with St. Bernadette as it targets the marginalised growth.

Moreover, Mrs. Tamako indicated that the school teaches amongst others, braille language for the visually impaired to enhance their literacy and numeracy skills, computer, life skills as well as primary education.

She mentioned that while the centre wishes to offer accommodation to all children with this type of disability so that they can be assisted holistically but such is impossible due to shortage of resources.

Therefore, she reiterated that preference is first given to children coming from far districts before opting for those coming from near places.

“We strongly appeal to the government and all stakeholders to continue supporting the centre so that more positive results can be achieved in order to give hope for children,” he said.

Currently the Agency has established that there are 50 years at the centre who are provided with different needs and care.
