Lesotho has initiated a pilot program for a new digital identification system, led by the Ministry of Information. This system aims to improve access to public and private services, reduce paperwork, and enhance efficiency in service delivery. The pilot will start on April 2, 2026, with around 10,000 participants undergoing biometric registration.

The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), Mr Kanono Ramashamole, has led the rollout of a pilot programme for Lesotho’s new digital/service identification system, marking a significant step toward improving service delivery and accelerating the country’s digital transformation.

In the interview, the Principal Secretary said the system will make it easier for citizens to access a wide range of both public and private services, while also modernizing interactions between citizens and government institutions by reducing paperwork, easing long queues, and improving overall efficiency in service delivery.

He further noted that the initiative is still in its early stages and will first undergo a testing phase. The pilot programme is set to begin on April 2, 2026, and will involve approximately 10,000 participants.

Adding to this, the Director General in the Department of Information, Communication and Technology, Mr Thapeli Tjabane, stated that in order to register for the digital/service identification system, individuals will be required to present a valid national identity document and a registered SIM card number. He also noted that users will undergo biometric registration as part of the process to ensure secure and reliable identification.

Lesotho has been working towards digital transformation in various sectors, aiming to modernize its public services. The introduction of a digital identification system is a crucial step in this journey, as it seeks to streamline processes and improve citizen engagement with government services.
