UNICEF has praised Lesotho for its progress in children’s education, particularly for learners with disabilities. During a fundraising event, Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane announced a M5.4 million pledge from Zutari to support special needs education. The event raised over M6 million, showcasing the commitment to inclusive education in Lesotho.
Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Right Honourable, The Prime Minister Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane expressed gratitude over the M5. 4 million pledge made by Zutari company aimed at supporting learners with disabilities and special needs.
He said this during his second annual Golf Tournament Fundraising held in Maseru.
Mr. Matekane said the above-mentioned amount of money which is equivalent to M1.8 million per year will support learners with special needs for a period of three years, adding that it will go a long way in supporting students in the engineering field.
He also disclosed that more than 400 learners were assisted with the M1 million which was raised last year, appealing to all to contribute in the fund-raising event to ensure children with special needs don’t feel neglected.
Speaking at the same event, the Minister of Education and Training Prof. Ntoi Rapapa commended the PM for the initiative as well as his participation in annual back to school events.
“The Ministry wouldn’t be where it is if it was not because of your support” he stressed, adding that both events contributed significantly towards the education of learners with special needs.
Furthermore, UNICEF Representative Mr. Deepak Bhaskaran said every child in Lesotho deserves a fair chance in life thus the fundraising event is a step towards the attainment of this goal.
He also commended the country for significant strides in ensuring children access education regardless of their vulnerability.
Meanwhile the Agency has learnt that this year’s event raised over M6 million that was collected through company and individual pledges as well as auctioning of designer suits.

Over the years, various initiatives have been launched to improve educational opportunities for all children, regardless of their circumstances. The government’s collaboration with organizations like UNICEF has been crucial in promoting inclusive education and ensuring that vulnerable children receive the support they need to succeed academically.
