Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Minister of Information, Communication, Science, Technology and Innovation, Nthati Moorosi, has called on learners and the wider public to embrace responsible and safe use of social media and the digital space.
Speaking during a Cyber Security awareness event held at Zenon High School in Sefikeng on Friday, Ms. Moorosi underscored the importance of digital literacy in an increasingly connected world.
She noted that while Lesotho is making strides in expanding access to technology, significant challenges remain in ensuring that every Mosotho benefits from digital services.
The Minister stressed that support from development partners is crucial in bridging the digital divide, adding that access alone is not enough without proper understanding of the risks associated with online platforms.
She highlighted growing concerns such as cyberbullying, online scams and the spread of misinformation, urging users to be vigilant and informed.
Ms. Moorosi further emphasized that all citizens, regardless of profession, form part of the digital ecosystem.
She pointed out that even workers such as cleaners, who may often be overlooked in digital inclusion efforts, need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to protect their personal information and engage responsibly online.
Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation, Ms. Bernadette Lewis highlighted that cybersecurity awareness is a collective responsibility.
She said that meaningful progress can only be achieved through strong collaboration between governments, institutions and communities.
Ms. Lewis explained that initiatives such as the digital roadshow are designed to provide practical skills and knowledge, empowering individuals to safely navigate the digital environment.
She added that as countries continue to accelerate digital transformation, fostering cybersecurity awareness at grassroots level remains essential to ensure inclusivity and that no one is left behind.
The event forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen digital awareness and promote a safer online environment across communities in Lesotho.
