Africa-Press – Lesotho. World Vision Lesotho together with Disaster Management Authority (DMA) has through the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Lesotho trained journalists on the proper use of concepts of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) information to inform, alert and educate communities on prevention initiatives that work well and safe lives against the hazards.

The 32 Journalists were trained about the basis of disaster, roles and responsibilities of DMA and also on reporting DRR news accurately with the assistance of DRR concepts including protection, hazard, vulnerability, resilience, early warning and others.

Participating journalists were identified from various media houses within the country including radios, newspapers, online media platforms and Television (TV). In his remarks, World Vision National Director (ND) James Chifwelu embraced the initiative the three institutions have embarked on.

He mentioned that they realized and recognized the role played by the media in the society, he said it is important and if the efforts are well directed, they can help the country to do much better. He highlighted that the media is always involved during the disaster occurrences to enlighten and inform people.

Meanwhile World Vision Humanitarian and Emergency Relief Director and Facilitator Tšeliso Mokoai encouraged the media to go back not only as news editors and journalists who are perceived to be one sided when conducting investigations of disaster management issues.

“It will be beautiful to see you as agents of change like we promised you that you are now joining us as DRR development partners because when we talk of communities’ transformation, we talk of the platform of the media house,” Mokoai noted.

“The partnership we are engaged in today for me it’s a win, and we need to celebrate that.

You and us as development partners, we ought to have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will help us share the skills and little resources that we have for the benefit of the communities that we serve,” Mokoai enlightened.

World Vision Humanitarian Manager North Region from Berea to Mokhotlong ‘Mankuebe Nkuebe showed appreciation to the journalists for participating in the workshop.

“It came into my consideration that the participants understand the various roles played by the government and other organizations to tackle and reduce disaster growth in the country,” she noted.
