Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>The Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS), in a joint initiative with UNICEF on Thursday distributed hygiene packages to 71 households of the Matebeleng community in Quthing, and handed over a recently renovated water system supply project to the Ministry of Water. The partnership also facilitated the construction of tippy taps using locally available material.<\/p>\n

In support of the Lesotho government\u2019s response to drought emergency and efforts to increase access to drinking water services in achievement of SDG6 UNICEF, through the UN Resident Coordinator\u2019s Office, received funds from UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).<\/p>\n

Some of these funds were earmarked to rehabilitate water systems in seven most affected districts in Lesotho. The project cost was M4 010 957 funded by CERF and UN MPTF, benefiting 7 316 people in 13 communities in the seven districts of Mokhotlong, Maseru, Thaba-Tseka, Quthing, Mafeteng, Mohale\u2019s Hoek and Qacha\u2019s Nek.<\/p>\n

Water systems for rehabilitation were identified and prioritized by DRWS district engineers, and final selection was done by UNICEF based on available funds.<\/p>\n

Through competitive bidding, UNICEF entered into a contract with Maseru Plastics and Pumps in March to rehabilitate 13 systems in seven districts for 12 months (6 months implementation period followed by 6 months defects and liability period).<\/p>\n

One of the 13 communities in seven districts that benefited from this project Matebeleng is a rural community with slightly over 300 people (about 80 households).<\/p>\n

The Minister of Water, Nkaku Kabi, appreciated the gesture, indicating that \u201cthe project has made our work easier as the ministry, ours is to keep maintaining it on behalf of these community. I am very grateful to UNICEF. \u201d<\/p>\n

In his remarks the Member for Parlianment for the Moyeni constituency under which Matebeleng falls, Mahooana Khati, also expressed gratitude to the LRCS and UNICEF for being part of an event in which something good in his home constituency has happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very happy for this community that one of their biggest plea of all times has been answered, this shows that even other needs will still be answered in due course,\u201d said Khati<\/p>\n

LRCS Secretary General, Kopano Masilo, said as implementing partners with UNICEF they were glad that this project will benefit such a huge number of Basotho.<\/p>\n

The LRCS also gave all the community members of Matebeleng washing powder and bar soaps as part of their efforts to promote hygiene during the COVID-19 pandemic; the also hand over food parcels to 1 978 vulnerable and disabled people in the 13 communities.<\/p>\n

The LRCS and UNICEF will also be involved in a project aimed at teaching children in schools and those at home about hygiene and to fight the further spread of the Coronavirus.<\/p>\n
