Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>Matekane Group of Companies (MGC) donated 1000 bags of cabbage to street vendors on Tuesday. Speaking at the handover event MGC Founder Sam Matekane said that the act of donating cabbage to street vendors was to show<\/p>\n

support and compassionate to small business owners who were tremendously affected by Covid-19 pandemic induced lockdown which forced other businesses to<\/p>\n

close down. Matekane said that the project of cabbage along with other unharvested plants are grown in Mant\u0161onyane in the district of Thaba-Tseka. He added that the project was<\/p>\n

initiated last year following the closure of border gates due to the advent of coronavirus. \u201cWe brought irrigation machines, extracted water from the river<\/p>\n

and build water tanks for irrigation. We had planted 75,000 heads of cabbages and only harvested 65,000 while 10,000 heads were lost,\u201d he stated. He said the cabbage bags will be donated in all the 10<\/p>\n

districts. \u201cToday 333 people received three bags of cabbage each, and the remaining people will receive on the second batch as the truck carries only 1000 bags.<\/p>\n

In total Maseru will receive 3000 bags,\u201d Matekane added. He extended that the other main aim of the project is to help Lesotho produce for itself since Covid-19 has shown that if a country<\/p>\n

does not produce for its people, there will be bigger problems. \u201cThe only way we could survive a similar storm is if we produce for ourselves,\u201d Matekane<\/p>\n

stated. The District Administrator (DA) Mpane Nthunya thanked MGC for this noble initiative. He also urged Basotho to invest in farming and stop importing cabbage from South Africa (SA).<\/p>\n

On behalf of the street vendors\u2019 associations Mpho Chobokoane thanked MGC for meeting them half way. He said the lockdown was the most challenging time for small business owners.<\/p>\n
