Future developments in the field of physics may lead to time itself being regarded as non-existent, at least in the context of some theories, says Sam Baron, associate professor in philosophy at the Australian Catholic University.<\/p>\n

As Baron explains in an article published in The Conversation, physics is currently in crisis, and physicists are looking to find a replacement for general relativity and quantum mechanics, as while these two theories \u201cwork extremely well in their own right\u201d, they are also \u201cthought to conflict with one another\u201d.<\/p>\n

The so-called loop quantum gravity \u2013 a theory of quantum gravity which seeks replace general relativity and quantum mechanics \u201cwhile capturing the extraordinary success of both\u201d \u2013 appears to \u201celiminate time entirely\u201d, he notes, adding that \u201ca number of other approaches also seem to remove time as a fundamental aspect of reality\u201d.<\/p>\n

So what might happen if a new physical theory that does not feature time turns out to be correct, Baron asks, pointing out that people\u2019s entire lives are \u201cbuilt around time\u201d.<\/p>\n

Yet while a possible discovery that time does not exist \u201cwould seem to bring the entire world to a grinding halt\u201d, there may still be \u201ca way out of the mess\u201d, Baron suggests, noting that causation \u2013 \u201cthe sense in which one thing can bring about another\u201d \u2013 appears to be left intact by physics.<\/p>\n
