{"id":14051,"date":"2022-05-06T07:56:37","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T07:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/africas-debts-one-way-or-another-someones-going-to-have-to-pay"},"modified":"2022-05-06T08:41:20","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T08:41:20","slug":"africas-debts-one-way-or-another-someones-going-to-have-to-pay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/africas-debts-one-way-or-another-someones-going-to-have-to-pay","title":{"rendered":"Africa\u2019s Debts: One way or another someone\u2019s going to have to pay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span><a name=\"start-reading\"><\/a>A new poll of young Arab nationals in North Africa and the Middle East revealed the kind of numbers that give people like Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron nightmares.<\/p>\n<p>87% of the 18-24 years old surveyed expressed concerns about unemployment and a stunning 42% have considered leaving their country, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;cnbc.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/2020\/10\/06\/42percent-of-young-arabs-consider-leaving-their-country-as-economies-stall.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;html\">findings of the report<\/a> conducted by the global public relations agency <a href=\"https:\/\/asdaa-bcw.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/en\/\">ASDA\u2019A BCW<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When asked where they\u2019d like to go, European countries were of course high on the list. The sentiments of these young people are likely shared across Africa, where a similarly youthful population is facing a grim future due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>It all comes down to jobs and the ability to earn a living. History has shown that if people can\u2019t make enough money to feed themselves and their families in one place, they\u2019ll pick up and go somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>One would think that after what European countries, especially Germany and Sweden, went through with the last mass migration from the Middle East brought on by the Syrian war, that they\u2019d be sufficiently motivated to make sure it doesn\u2019t happen again. Well, that doesn\u2019t appear to be the case.<\/p>\n<p>When \u2014 because it\u2019s no longer \u201cif\u201d \u2014 African economies begin to collapse under the combined weight of unsustainable debt burdens, surging public health costs, persistently low commodity prices, and devalued currencies that effectively push up the cost of borrowing beyond their reach, European and other international stakeholders will not be able to say they didn\u2019t see this coming.<\/p>\n<p>And one way or another, they\u2019re going to pay.
