Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>An attempt to have the National Assembly debate the journey traversed by the country thus far since she attained independence was on Friday met with resistance as the Speaker of the National<\/p>\n

Assembly Sephiri Motanyane cautioned against it. Hon. \u2018Matlhohonolofatso T\u0161epang T\u0161ita-Mosena highlighted as per the standing orders that the House is allowed to commemorate<\/p>\n

certain days and through this wisdom she called for introspection of the journey traversed by Lesotho, saying that Independence Day is a perfect time for that activity.<\/p>\n

The Speaker said technically that should be done in the form of activity, this despite Mosena wanting a debate of the House. Movement for Economic Change (MEC) Deputy Leader<\/p>\n

remarked: \u201cIt is very important for the leadership of this country to observe that particular day because it seems to have lost its meaning; it seems to have<\/p>\n

lost significance to Basotho,\u201d she lamented. \u201cIf the recognition of that particular day does not begin at the highest level of leadership in the country, then it says it is not<\/p>\n

going to be easy for Basotho to truly appreciate it. \u201d Mosena added: \u201cIt is also to pave way for the future we want, revisiting our commitment to change\u201d.<\/p>\n

Taking stock of the ongoing national reforms for the \u201cLesotho we want\u201d, she said it is important to review the journey that the country has set for herself in alignment with the National Strategic<\/p>\n

Development Plan (NSDP II) as we prepare for NSDP III. Motanyane advised her to move the motion that seeks for determination of the Independence Day to be institutionalised.<\/p>\n

According to standing order number 78 of the National Assembly, the House sells drive to observe some of the following Institutionalized days which are SADC Day, Commonwealth Day, Youth Day, Open Day, Day for Disabled,<\/p>\n

Day for Aged, World AIDS Day and Armistice Day. The Speaker said these days could be observed on dates determined by the House. He said they may be commemorated within the precincts<\/p>\n

of the parliament or place which may be determined by the House. Meanwhile, the Alliance of Democrats (AD) member Hon. Mokhele Moletsane said the motion was procedurally \u201cnot in order\u201d saying it is<\/p>\n

not \u201cclear\u201d how such days can be commemorated. Mosena on the other hand insisted her preference was a commemoration in the form of a debate, to spur discussions on every platform where Basotho could<\/p>\n

\u201cair their views as a form of healing and getting new motivation\u201d, especially as Lesotho is headed for National Elections later this year.<\/p>\n
