Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>Advocate Tlotliso Polaki has been appointed as the new Ombudsman. This is according to the statement published by the Prime Minister Press Attach\u00e9 on Saturday.
\n\u201cHis Majesty the King, acting [on] the advice of the Rt Hon the Prime Minister, has \u2026 appointed Advocate Angelina Tlotliso Polaki as the new Ombudsman.
\nThis is done in accordance with section 134 (1) of the Lesotho Constitution,\u201d reads the statement. These developments come after the then Ombudsman, Advocate T\u0161eliso Mokoko was recently appointed to the High Court bench. Advocate Polaki is the sixth Ombudsman and the second female to hold this position since the establishment of this entity.<\/p>\n

The Ombudsman office was established by the Section 134 of the 1993 Constitution of Lesotho and enacted through the Ombudsman Act No. 9 of 1996.
\nThe incoming Ombudsman has a considerable experience in law and has held key positions in both public and private sector. Advocate Polaki has under her belt, an LLB and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting (BCom Accounting) both obtained from the National University of Lesotho (NUL) and an LLM Corporate from University of Natal. She also hold other post graduate diplomas and certificates from University of Johannesburg and University of Cape Town.<\/p>\n

From serving as Magistrate in Maseru, Advocate Polaki has also served as a Legal Counsel at the National Nuclear Regulator South Africa. She was the Legal and Compliance Manager at Mvelaphanda Group of Companies under its subsidy, Zonke. The former Magistrate chairs and holds disciplinary hearings for some of the local and South African institutions.<\/p>\n

She held a position of a Senior Legal Advisor at the National Gambling Board in Pretoria, South Africa. The incoming Ombudsman is also a trained Forensic Investigator and has worked at Gobodo Forensic Accounting in Durban. Advocate Polaki was also serving as the Chief Legal Officer at a now defunct National COVID-19 Secretariat (NACOSEC). She is currently serving as the Director Legal Services at QMMH (Queen \u2018Mamohato Memorial Hospital) She has written a published article in the scholarly journal titled: The shortcomings of the common law and the Companies Act 61 of 1973 in regulating executive remuneration in South Africa: Is the code of corporate practices and conduct the answer for listed companies? Asked what contribution she is bringing to the office, she told this reporter that: \u201cThe office is already a fully-fledged functional office and mine is to steer the ship and bring a level of excellence given its mandate.
\nThe Ombudsman is instrumental in the administration of justice within the democratic dispensation such as Lesotho. This office is tasked with the responsibility to, amongst others, investigate aggrieved people\u2019s complaints, any conduct within the public administration where it is alleged to be impropriety as well as investigate the alleged cases against human rights abuse and compile a report for a remedial action to be taken against such misconduct.<\/p>\n
