Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>Roads Directorate has announced the In-house routine maintenance works dubbed Mekoari Programme, which will be implemented in maintaining the roads around the country.
\nThis, was revealed at a press conference on Tuesday. Roads Directorate Acting Director General Teboho Mokhoane disclosed that the roads maintenance will go on in all ten districts of Lesotho and will be done by Basotho.
\nHe said the roads are dilapidated due to, among other reasons, the extreme rainfalls which took place earlier. Mokhoane said some roads have reached their Design lifespan and they will be fixed and refurbished. The programme started on Monday and is expected to continue until March 2023. Mokhoane said M16 million is allocated for this programme.<\/p>\n

He said the roads will be maintained to fill potholes, fix guardrails and many other challenges that do not require the use of big machinery as the maintenance is planned to be done through small tools and by unskilled labour.
\nMokhoane said in the past years, the roads were not maintained due to the low allocation of budget. He revealed that among other issues, the Mekoari Programme will create jobs as workers will be hired throughout the implementation of the project.
\nDirector Road Network Maintenance Lebohang Mohau said the maintenance of the roads will be done in all 10 districts and will be done on 10 roads, 30 sections, 802 kilometres and 850 workers will be hired, while the project is expected to take 9 months.
\nHe indicated that Roads Directorate is responsible for construction, upgrading, rehabilitation and maintenance of primary, secondary, tertiary and other roads as well as bridges on the Lesotho Road Network.
\nThe Roads Directorate was established as a corporate body by the Roads Directorate Act of 2010 and was formed mainly for better service delivery and more effective and efficient management of the road network.<\/p>\n
