Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>In an interesting turn of events, a Chicago-based tech firm called Meta Company is going to court against Facebook, alleging that the social network stole its name and \u201clivelihood\u201d after it rebranded its name to Meta.<\/p>\n

Meta Company Founder Nate Skulic alleged that when Facebook failed to buy them, it aimed to \u201cbury\u201d the company by force of media. On October 28, \u201cFacebook decided to commit trademark infringement and call themselves Meta,\u201d Skulic claimed in a public letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey couldn\u2019t buy us, so they tried to bury us by force of media.<\/p>\n

We shouldn\u2019t be surprised by these actions \u2013 from a company that continually says one thing and does another,\u201d Skulic added. Meta Company has decided to take legal action against Facebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis message may be regarded as a public cease and desist,\u201d Skulic said. Meta, the former Facebook company, was yet to react to these allegations.<\/p>\n

\u201cFacebook and its operating officers are deceitful and acting in bad faith, not only towards us, but to all of humanity.<\/p>\n

\u201d Facing intense scrutiny over users\u2019 data privacy, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg last month announced that his company will have a new name, Meta.<\/p>\n

Somewhat predictably, Zuckerberg downplayed that this rebranding, the first in Facebook\u2019s 17 years of existence, was to divert a barrage of bad PR. The name \u201cFacebook\u201d doesn\u2019t fully encompass everything the company does now, and is still closely linked to one product, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company.<\/p>\n

\u201d Skulic said that for the past three months, Facebook lawyers have been hounding \u201cus to sell our name to them\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe refused their offer on multiple bases.<\/p>\n

Namely, the low offer wouldn\u2019t cover the costs of changing our name, and we insisted on knowing the client and intent, which they did not want to disclose,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

At least two law firms were involved: One in the US that requested its trademark and domains and the other in Europe aggressively contacting trying to get \u201cus to sell its domain registrations\u201d, he alleged.<\/p>\n

A live trademark was filed for Meta Company in 2016 that lists the registrant owner at Chicago, Illinois. However, there is a 2015 trademark listed for Meta with the owner listed as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate to have been associated with a company so rooted in controversy and fixated on domination. We aim to be distinguished from Facebook\u2019s totalitarian view of the future. We hope the negative association with Facebook and its founder will be forgotten \u2013 but we won\u2019t ignore the damages done,\u201d Skulic said.<\/p>\n

Another US-based company called Meta PC that sells computers, laptops, tablets and software, had reportedly asked for $20 million from Zuckerberg-owned Meta, to withdraw its registration application and free the name of \u2018Meta\u2019 .<\/p>\n

The founders of the tech start-up, Joe Darger and Zack Shutt, even posted a video on Twitter, jokingly revealing the name change from Meta PC to Facebook.<\/p>\n
