{"id":19766,"date":"2022-09-10T11:33:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-10T11:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/women-urged-to-break-into-energy-sector"},"modified":"2022-09-10T11:33:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-10T11:33:00","slug":"women-urged-to-break-into-energy-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/women-urged-to-break-into-energy-sector","title":{"rendered":"Women urged to break into energy sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>THE Ministry of Energy has encouraged women to break gender-based barriers in the energy sector.<br \/>\nSpeaking at an event to celebrate Women\u2019s Month in Maseru last Friday, the ministry\u2019s principal secretary \u2019Masekhobe Seeiso-Moholobela said more women should participate in the energy sector.<br \/>\nShe said the issues of gender in the energy sector are crucial because energy affects women and men differently.<br \/>\n\u201cThis makes access, use, and impact of energy services different for women and men,\u2019\u2019 she said.<br \/>\n\u201cGender roles, mostly defined by sociocultural expectations and behaviours, determine women and men\u2019s role and relationships as energy providers and users,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nSeeiso-Moholobela said women should participate in the energy market and in decision-making processes.<br \/>\nShe said at a technical level, studies had revealed that the majority of technicians and engineers are men, while most of the women occupy supportive positions.<br \/>\nShe said with the female component of the total population of Lesotho standing at more than 50 percent, \u201cwe will be ignoring a powerful social force at our own peril\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cWe need to accelerate our efforts to transform the unequal social and economic relations that continue to exist between men and women in the energy sector,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nOne of the women entrepreneurs in the energy sector, Morongoe Tlali from One Power Project, said their project has managed to establish over 11 programmes which are now in operation.<br \/>\nTlali said they have another power energy programme which provides energy to health facilities.<br \/>\nShe said this project serves remote areas where there is no electricity.<br \/>\nShe said they serve a population of 12 000 households and 800 businesses.<br \/>\nShe said they also have a population of 200 in the village of Ha-Makebe, in the Berea district.<br \/>\nThe founding director of Technology for Economic Development, \u2019Mantopi Lebofa, said the government together with the private sector and private organisations have to collaborate to create a conducive environment in the energy sector.<br \/>\nLebofa said 60 percent of the population uses wood.<br \/>\nThis calls for the ministry of energy to set policies which regulate the use of our natural resources.<br \/>\nShe said women should be motivated to protect nature while using wood at the same time.<br \/>\n\u201cRelevant authorities should bring closer the energy sources to communities,\u2019\u2019 Lebofa said.<br \/>\nThe marketing manager at MOSET, Lisemelo Mokorose, said their goal is to see women being capacitated with necessary tools to partake in renewable energy.<br \/>\nMokorose said they are already partnering with banks to financially assist women in the sector.<br \/>\nThe Public Relations Officer at Women in Sustainable Energy Lesotho, \u2019Matseleng Malataliana-Sepiriti, said their organisation is aligned with the sustainable development goals.<br \/>\nMalataliana-Sepiriti said they realised that most women are scared to tap into this industry since they believe it requires physical energy.<br \/>\nShe encouraged more women to enroll in engineering schools.<br \/>\n\u201cWomen are the key energy users in households and businesses,\u201d Malataliana-Sepiriti said.<br \/>\n\u201cWomen should strive to be job creators in this industry not only consumers,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nMoreover, Seeiso-Moholobela said the status of the private sector is not satisfactory where the representation of women and men in senior management in comparison with the public sector is 44 percent and 56 percent respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\">Lesotho<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho.
