Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>DEFENCE Principal Secretary \u2019Mamonyane Bohloko last weekend quit the All Basotho Convention (ABC) and joined the Democratic Congress (DC) party less than a week before the key election.<\/p>\n

Bohloko received a \u201chero\u2019s welcome\u201d at a DC rally held last Sunday amid cheers from the party\u2019s women\u2019s league members in Maseru. In an interview with thepost, Bohloko said she was not comfortable discussing her defection with the media.<\/p>\n

She said it is not the media\u2019s business that she had defected. \u201cThis is not the right time to discuss my defection because a lot of things can happen,\u201d Bohloko said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a critical time to talk about such politics as the general election are approaching.<\/p>\n

\u201d Bohloko said she will give out a detailed interview to the media when she is ready after the election.<\/p>\n

Contacted for comment yesterday, the ABC\u2019s spokesman, Montoeli Masoetsa, downplayed Bohloko\u2019s defection saying she \u201cwas not adding any value to the party\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was not a strong member, just that we gave her the principal secretary\u2019s job,\u201d Masoetsa said.<\/p>\n

He said Bohloko\u2019s absence would \u201cnot be felt in the ABC as she was not bringing anything to the table\u201d. He said they knew about Bohloko\u2019s looming defection in July even before she could make it public.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe left months ago and she did not have any significance in the All Basotho Convention.
\nBohloko, who is not much known in political circles, made headlines in 2018 when the parliament\u2019s Public Affairs Committee (PAC) grilled her over staffing Lesotho\u2019s embassies with unqualified accountants.<\/p>\n

It was, at the time, believed that she hired had ABC members based on their political affiliation instead of merit. Bohloko was at that time the principal secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n

The PAC grilled Bohloko for hiring unqualified people in Lesotho\u2019s missions abroad as accountants. The committee\u2019s worry was that these unqualified accountants were so incompetent that they could not stop simple acts of corruption and fraud.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a bottomless hole in the Foreign Affairs Ministry in which public funds are thrown,\u201d Selibe Mochoboroane, the then PAC chairman, said.<\/p>\n

Bohloko told Mochoboroane\u2019s committee that they were \u201ctold to hire people on the basis of political affiliations instead of their professional qualifications\u201d. Masquerading as an accountant is a criminal offence punishable by a prison term in Lesotho.<\/p>\n
