Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>The Lesotho Electricity and Water Authority (LEWA) has held the last of its nationwide consultative meetings to seek public opinion of the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) bid for a 32.6 percent increase on electricity tariffs.<\/p>\n

The public meeting was held at the Mojalefa Lephole Hall in Maseru, and was hosted in partnership with the Lesotho Textile Exporters Association (LTEA), the Consumer Protection Association (CPA).<\/p>\n

Speaking at the gathering LEC General Manager, Lefa Motlalane, said the increment the company was proposing is forced by escalating electricity prices in South African utility company Eskom and EDM of Mozambique from which they buy.<\/p>\n

According to Motlalane the \u2018Muela hydropower station produces only 72 megawatts of electricity for the entire country, and is inadequate as the LEC demand 152 megawatts to meet supply requirements.<\/p>\n

Following a string of presentations LEC Corporate Planner, Mothae Nonyana, noted that this fiscal year the company has been allocated less money compared to the previous fiscal year \u201cwhich affects our daily expenditures.
\nHe further observed a worrying increase in the vandalism of LEC property in the period between 2015 and 2017, which he said makes it expensive for the company to run efficiently \u2013 also thanking the Lesotho Mounted Police (LMPS) community policing forums for their continued support in uprooting vandalizing of LEC property.<\/p>\n
