Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>While the whole world commemorates United Nation Volunteers Day on December 05, the Lesotho branch joined the whole world in commemorating \u2018UN International Volunteers Day\u2019 (IVD) on Tuesday this week at UN House in Maseru. UN Lesotho\u2019s theme for this year was \u2018Volunteer for an Inclusive Future\u2019.<\/p>\n

International Volunteers Day, started by United Nations 34 years ago on December 05 for the purpose of acknowledging the effort, contributions and achievements of volunteers in different organisations and communities around the world.<\/p>\n

In his remarks during the commemoration of UN International Volunteers Day in Lesotho the UN Resident Coordinator in Lesotho Salvator Niyonzima said in this year\u2019s theme they are going to align themselves with highlight of the political forum on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) that took place in July this year in New York.<\/p>\n

He said the theme is: \u201cEmpowering of people and insuring inclusiveness and equality, empowering of people, children inclusiveness and equality for all.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are gathered here today to celebrate United Nation International Volunteers Day, normally IVD is commemorated globally on December 05, but this year that day was celebrated by United States of America Peace Corps in Lesotho in the outskirts of Maseru therefore most of us were not available to make it successful.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis theme pays tribute to volunteerism and the empowerment of people\u2019s to participate in their own communities, inclusiveness to promote diversity and non-discrimination and volunteerism as a mechanism to reduce inequality for the society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Niyonzima further said, the IVD highlights the power of volunteering and it does recognises volunteer\u2019s contributions to SDGs specifically SDG number 10 which is to reduce inequality.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s theme remind us that volunteering provides opportunities to people particularly those who are often excluded, that is the ones who are always left behind, but through volunteerism we have the possibility to create social bonds and give them a voice to vulnerable groups leaving no one behind,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the same occasion, one of the UN volunteer Lesotho Thabiso Ntoanyane said volunteerism is the act of humanitarian, meaning someone volunteers to offer help without expecting anything in return.<\/p>\n
